Verbouwing GAK plint gestart

Construction started re-using GAK building Amsterdam

"ground floor and basement former GAK building is an attractive meeting place"

Commissioned by the Amsterdam Company Zecc Architects is working on the conversion of the plinth of the former GAK building in Amsterdam West. The GAK building dates from 1960 and was once the most advanced and largest office building in the Netherlands. With an area of 40,000 m2 building space offered to 2650 employees. It was a symbol for the modern office. Now, over 50 years later and after a vacancy of several years this building gets a second life. Now it is the symbol for the great challenge of repurposing vacant office.

The plinth is an important meeting area with a diverse program. It is a 'shop in shop' principle supplemented by a "Wash & Coffee ', catering and flexible workstations. In the design, the bottom two layers are spatially connected to each other by removing large floor areas. The raw steel is visible through the large voids making it possible for daylight to enter deep in the building. The entrance of the upper housing is spatially part of these floors.

Commissioned by AM Living and Stadgenoot, architect Wessel de Jonge is responsible for the realization of 320 student residences in the north wing of the building.
